Ipswich Unemployed Action isn’t just a champion for the rights of the unemployed in Ipswich, although since its formation in 2009 it has grew outside the boundaries of the local town of Ipswich however there is still a clear focus on the local town.
Ipswich Unemployment Action is now a world famous example of the unemployed sticking up for their rights but in addition focusing on value for the taxpayer too and tracking events in the Welfare to Work industry. It wasn’t long before the group developed with its own spin off network of websites called the Flexible New Deal Scandal network – operating independently from the group although still maintaining strong ties.
With Ipswich Unemployed Action came along numerous requests from the media including the BBC (TV and Radio), Channel 4, ITV news and independent TV production companies looking to investigate the Welfare to Work industry.
It wasn’t long, with our reports of the legalities, human rights issues and expanding defence regarding Labour’s Work for Your Benefit scheme, that the ConDem(n) Government decided to silently pull the pilot scheme and await trying to incorporate it with their Work Programme.
It isn’t solely jobseekers, UK Government departments and the press who were made aware of our work. Even Governments such as the Australian Government had used our content to make reports evaluating the UK’s welfare to work system, assumingly in regards to A4e’s desire to further expand there.
Although not a single penny was spent on advertising or SEO optimisation works, Ipswich Unemployed Action dominated Google search results for numerous queries. Even today, a search for “Flexible New Deal” returns our websites above the companies delivering the course and the Indus Delta website on welfare to work industry. Only the DWP website was above, and should we have had SEO optimisation work done on our site, we would have reached #1. Staying true to the cause, we felt it was the wrong direction to be asking for donations to achieve this, as we had already made the first page for most search queries.
